Anyone ever used a sunshade on a scope ???? I made one for my gun today out of a black plastic pipe from a shopvac. My scope is a 6-24 x 42 and the front
bell is 2 1/16" , the pipe was 2" i.d. so had to take the die grinder and take a little off the inside. Now it slips on the front of my scope
nicely, it's kind of snug but a good fit. I made it 5" long just have to try it out now. I know in low light situations the scope wont be able to
gather as much light but shouldnt be a problem. It will keep the yotes from seeing the scope lens to.

Do you ever do any actual work at that job of yours?
I have spent some time at the range looking through the scope with the shade on and off and I'm yet to be able to tell the difference. Scopes do look way cooler with the sun shade on though.

Ya, I occasionally do work. But on my break time and lunch its all government work. I get bored sometimes. I think it might make a difference when the sun is
at that perfect angle to where it blinds you when you look thru the scope. Yesterday I was out scanning a tree line in the evening and this one spot I was
watching the sun was driving me nuts. Well see if it works.

I think they help with sun glar. And with the heat coming off the barrel. this what I have on My custom 22 mag

I ask a world class shooter once about sunshades. I was told that out 200 yards+ it would make a difference of about 2" on your target. Something about
heat waves and cloud cover.

What do you mean by difference??

Just what I said, I get less glare from the sun early in the morning and late in the afternoon, but can I live without it yes. Only in certain cases do they
help me, the sun has to be just right, and shining into the scope. Most of the day there is not much difference. I don't use one on My calling gun, just My
grounghog rifle.

I assume he means a difference in point of impact. These types of things especially begin to emerge when you start shooting 600 yards and farther. There are
"unexplained" shifts in point of impact from day to day. Sometimes they can be explained by different light conditions. I don't doubt that a
sunshade might make a difference.

I shot a few quick shots the other day at 300 yds. and going off the ballistics calculator on the hornady website I held .6 mills high. and my group was good
on the elevation but a tad to the right. First time i shot the ar at that distance, the group was a 5 shot st just over 3" with the scope on 8 power.
Gonna try it off the bench next time on a calmer day but turn up the scope and see if the point of impact changes..

Sounds like a pretty good group at that distance. If your poi changes much I would suspect the scope.

My point of impact doesnt change from 6 to 20 power at 100 and 200 yds. I just want to see if the shade effects it at all at longer ranges. IF anything it
makes the gun look that much sweeter.

At long ranges there are several things that can cause an apparent change of POI. One of the most common is from a mirage, heat rising from the ground which
will give you a distorted site picture. This type of thing a sunshade will have little effect. But don't forget as that bullet travels downrange switching
winds that are sometimes hard to dope can also have a big effect, and if your scope is out of square, even 1 to 3 degrees can make a big difference as well as
how level the shooter is holding the firearm.
