Hey guys-I am coming back to this topic again. I have a chance to pick up a clean, slightly used Lincoln AC 225 with extra stuff for $150. I should do this
if I ever want to get into welding, right?

Lincoln welders aren't known for their longevity really. Mom and dad bought mine for high school graduation in 1977. It still works fine, and hasn't
caused me a moments trouble and has welded some big projects, and saved major bucks on repairs, but it could be on it's last leg, who knows?
Seriously, I think new they are about $285 anymore the best I remember. As a side note, mine was $85 back when I got mine!
And that’s
the way it might be………..Until next
time, Tooldummy

Sound like a decent deal HB if you are serious about getting into it. If you can learn to stick weld you can weld anything. All we stick weld really is cast,
and on site jobs with our portable. I can teach ya, I have taught many a people how to weld. In high school poeple were always stealing my plates and getting
A's, cheatin bastards. Just let me know where and when. You can come down to my shop for some further MIG skills. But I should teach you on your machine so
you are familiar with it. Thats the only Lincoln machine that I actually like, dont really care for any of there Mig machines.

I thought that it would be best if I learned on my machine. I'll have to get ahold of you here one evening after the garage is finished and the patio is
done, but before we start shooting deer on those depredation permits...

I also have the Lincoln. No complaints. Seems like about everybody has one. It will probably outlive me.

I was over at a flee market over the weekend and saw they had two there. They looked nice, but they had been repainted. A couple dollars worth of paint makes
everything look better. But anyway, one was $190 and the other was $225. I think this deal of yours sounds pretty good.

"Everybody" thinks they are a welder, or most people do. I have heard it all, "I have been welding for 20, 25 years" and then the guy
proceeds to tap the wire sticking out of the MIG gun on the metal trying to strike an arc!!!!!!! Then I am speechless.

I did some welding once, almost 20 years ago. My wife was in engineering school and was working an a project involving TIG welding 5056 aluminum and the
relative strength of the welds, etc. I snuck into the lab one day and played around. That's it. I would just like to be able to fix and reinforce stuff I
break or could "improve" with a little judicious welding.
Thanks for the advice. It's in the garage now. I'll get ahold of you later, Widow. HB |

TIG technology has come a long way. I do a lot of stainless with the TIG. Our TIG machine has too many bells and whistles, ther are so many different set up
parameters it drives me nuts. I also have a Welding Textbook you can borrow, has a lot of good info in it but doesnt compare to hand on..

I welded once about 30 years ago - at my uncle's shop. I was prolly 10-11 yrs. old. He gave me some scrap iron and a helmet and told me to try to write my
name with a stick welder. I intend to get a welder and learn some day. Sure would be useful for alot of things.
I did pick up a belt/disc sander for $15 and a bandsaw for $50 at garage sale this weekend. Someday I hope to find a similar steal on a welder.

Rock on. Thanks Widow. I have 1,000 paver bricks on skids in my driveway that need attention first, unfortunately.

You need a torch, a grinder, a wire brush, chip'n hammer to go with it.

What kind of torch, Jack? Got the rest covered.

You prolly need a plasma cutter.
Strange how you get a new tool and that only creates a need for another. Tools just seem to multiply like that. Kinda like the guns in Bwana's safe, I think.

I'd get acetalyne, in fact that's what I've got. I think mine are Victor but there's two major brands. Both are good. I think it's worth it
to just buy your own tanks. I didn't want to retire and every month wonder if it's worth it to keep paying rent on tanks if I didn't use them. Now
they are paid for and don't cost me any thing if I use them or not. Acetalyne is a little more versatile and more common to find than other fuel gases. You
can braze with acetalyne. It's almost impossible with propolyen or propane.
If you've got all that covered you are pretty good shape. I think that about covers most of my own shop, a good heavy table, a big vise or two, may be a band saw after that. Just depends on what you find your self doing or wanting to do. Fire extinguisher, or couple buckets of sand and a couple buckets of water.

As a fellow welder i'd say that is very sound advice. One other thing i've found very helpful is thin cutoff wheels for my 4" grinder.

You will need a bucket of sand for doing cast jobs although you might not do to many. Look at auctions for the tanks, if they are old you will just have to pay
a few bucks to get them recertified. You can braze with propylene, I have done it many times even with the cutting head on the torch. Just depends on your
skill level. Brazings easy anyhow with a little practice. +1 one the cutting discs, along with grinding and sanding discs. I will hook you up HB with a good
start off selection of goodies.
