Three squirrels with three shots last fall.
I tried shooting my .22 at 100 yards and was surprised at how good of a group I got. I don't remember exactly what it was, but probably something like 3" or so. I sighted my .22 so I can take a shot on out to 75 yards. It shoots fairly flat within that range.
I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts. Ps. 119:45

Well........let me think. I never was much a shot with a .22, but my Uncle Jed was pretty good. One day Uncle Jed, cousin Jethrow, and me were a shootin'
flies off of honey we had put on a fence post about 100 yards away while we waited on Granny to fix supper. Uncle Jed could wax a fly slicker than possum fat
in a skillet, course that was before his eyes went bad and he had to start usin' one of those newfangled things they call a scope. He never did quite catch
on to shootin' through a looking glass though.
One other time my cousin John and I were squirrell hunting and there was a hickory nut tree out in a soybean field. John saw this squirrell jump from one limb to another and he leaned on a fence post and took a shot. I estimate the range at 80 yards or there about. I didn't have a range finder back then, and the tree has long been bulldozed out so it's too late to measure the distance now. But John was using an open sighted Marlin .22 lever action. Probably the best shot I can recall. Gosh, time flies! That's been about 35 years ago, and I remember it like yesterday. I think they say at the onstage of Alzheimers that's one of the symptoms. Remembering things years ago clearly and the present.......hmmmm. What was I saying?
And that’s
the way it might be………..Until next
time, Tooldummy

The 100 yard national records were set in 1987 at NRA registered compititions. The target has a 1 inch x ring to break ties, and a 2 inch 10 ring. All shooting
was from a prone position with no artificial support.
The standard course of fire is 40 shots fired in 2, 20 minute strings. The record for iron sights is a perfect 400 with 39 of the 40 inside the X ring. The record for the any sight match, which alows a scope, is a perfect 400 with all 40 in the X ring. To set the record as high as possible the shooter went on to fire another 40 into the same group. That is 80 straight shots into a 1 inch group at 100 yards. My personal best on that course was 389 with 19x. That was a long time ago. |

My smallbore prone rifle was a Winchester M-52 in a Freeland thumb hole free rifle stock, with a Canjar adjustable hook butt plate, and a cheap Tasco 20x scope
in pedistal mounts. The scope was picked for the large 40mm lens to give me more light.
A 12 pound single shot .22. A good match grade rifle and sights will start around a grand easy. |
