Christmas is upon us and this time of year I always think of a couple of my favorite Christmas stories. If you guys have any to share, I would really enjoy
hearing them.
I guess I was about four or five years old. Kind of at that age where I really kind of wondered about Santa Clause. How on earth could one old guy deliver
all those toys single handledly anyway? Well, we always went to my Grandma Limes's on Christmas Eve. My cousins JR. and Jerry Dean and myself usually
ended up out on the front porch playing when the weather wasn't too cold. They were older than me, but I was smarter so we got along pretty good,
normally. This particular year all of a sudden we started hearing bells jingleing. We looked up into the clear sky and could distinctly see a string of
lights moving through the air, slowly. We watched in wonder for quite a while, then realized it was undoubtly the jolly elf himself, Santa Clause! We ran
inside and finally, after much coaxing, got an adult to come outside and witness what we had saw. But the amazing site was gone! I remember this like it was
yesterday, although I can barely remember what I had for supper last night (alzheimers I think). My cousins and I have lost touch over the years and I
don't recall talking to the one for almost 35 years now, and probably 3 years or so on the other one. But anyway, they talked to my mom recently and BOTH
of them asked if I remembered this story, so it must still prey on their minds too! What was it I wonder? A UFO most likely some would say. Others say maybe
someone with too much time and money rented an airplane with a string of lights trailing from it and loud speakers to fool gullible children on Christmas Eve.
But I? Well, I think it was none other than Santa Clause himself. What do you think???????????????????
Then there was the time my oldest daughter was about four I think. We never put out any presents until early Christmas morning ( 1 or 2 a.m.). My wife and I
had got up and were placing the presents under the tree when I hear the pitty pat of tiny feet behind me! I turn around and there stands my little girl,
rubbing the sleep from her eyes. She askes what were doing and I tell her I thought I heard Santa Clause know on the door and I got up to let him in (we
didn't have a chimney at the time). We all go back to bed and I whisper to my wife to watch this (yeh, just like the typical redneck, but I didn't ask
her to hold my beer!). I rap my nuckles against the wall and then I yell for Elyse to get back in bed! She was going to scare Santa off if she saw her up!
She yells back from her room in her sweet little voice "I AM in bed!" and I ask "Well then who do I hear up walking around???????" and
she replies "Santy Clause!" Guys, enjoy Christmas with your little ones while you can. They grow up so fast. This little story happened almost 20
years ago and I just can not believe my daughters full grown and moved out on her own now.
Which brings me to another little story. Several years ago I started calling my nephews and niece helping Santa Clause out. They enjoyed it and I carried on
this tradition to my great nephews and some of the kids of the friends and people I work with. Last night I called a little boy who's mommy told
me.......er uh I mean Santa Clause that he had been sassing her. Santa called and give him a quick tune-up. He didn't think that Santa knew what he was
doing, but surprise! Santa DID know! He told his daddy (a buddy at work) that Santa knew all the bad stuff he had been doing but since he'd been good all
year long up until now he would still get a few things for Christmas. (Hey, I what did you think I was going to tell him? I pretend to be Santa, not the
Grinch!
Another little girl in Pensylvania got a call last night as well as last year. Her mommy told me to tell Santa that she was a little bashfull and not to get
his feelings hurt if she didn't want to talk. Santa called her and couldn't get off the phone! She was a regular chatterbox. Last night she told
Santa she wanted a pony and a puppy. Of course Santa couldn't promise that, but asked where she was going to keep a pony? She said South Dakota, quick as
a wink!
A little boy of one of the ladies I work with got a call last night too. Santa somehow knew who his favorite little buddy was, his favorite color, what he
liked to play with, and that he picked on his older sister. Funny how Santa knows everything, isn't it? She video taped it and him telling his dad on the
phone about Santa calling him. I can't wait to see it!
These phone calls have really put me in the Christmas spirit. The amazement of little kids, the excitement in their voices, their BELIVING they HAVE to be
good. Well, it does me much more good than them.
If you have a child that would enjoy a call from Santa (thank goodness for free long distance!) send me a PM with a phone number, the little ones name, and a
few things they like or like to do and I'll see if I can't talk old Santa into giving them a call. Oh, better mention the best time to call too.
Merry Christmas All!
